The Obvious Question
You've read our articles. You know our stance.
- Google is a surveillance machine.
- Meta tracks you across the web.
- TikTok builds psychological profiles of your children.
So why will we have social media accounts? Why will we post on TikTok—of all things—to reach parents?
Fair question. We'd ask it too.
Here is the honest answer.
The Reality: We Meet Parents Where They Are
Firegap exists to reach parents before bad habits form. And where are those parents? They're on Instagram. They're on TikTok. They're searching DuckDuckGo and Google for "best parental controls" and clicking the first sponsored link.
We cannot reach people who need this information by hiding from the platforms they use.
If we only published on a privacy-respecting platform with zero social media presence, we'd be speaking exclusively to people who already care about privacy. That's an echo chamber, not a mission.
Our goal is infiltration, not participation. We go where the parents are, deliver the message, and get out.
The Philosophy: Intentional Engagement
There is a difference between using a platform and being used by it.
Most people open TikTok to scroll. They open Instagram to browse. They open Facebook because it's habit. They are passive participants, and the platform extracts value from their attention.
We do the opposite.
We engage with these platforms intentionally, minimally, and defensively. We treat every platform as hostile territory. We enter with a purpose, accomplish our objective, and leave.
This is the model we want to teach you. Not "never use social media"—but never use it unconsciously.
Our Strategy: The Protocol (When We Launch)
We are currently focused on building our core content library. When we launch our social channels, here is the specific Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) we will follow:
TikTok
- Why we will use it: Our audience is there. Parents—especially mothers—turn to TikTok for advice on parenting, technology, and safety. If we're not there, someone else is filling their feed with the wrong information.
- How we will use it: We will post short-form educational content. We will not scroll. We will not engage with the algorithm recreationally. We will not use TikTok's direct messaging.
- What we will block: We will access TikTok through a hardened browser (not the app) whenever possible. We will disable camera and microphone access. We will not grant location permissions. We will clear cookies and cache after every session.
- Why we will use it: Visual content reaches parents who don't read long-form articles. Infographics and carousel posts are shareable, which extends our reach.
- How we will use it: We will post and leave. We will not browse the feed. We will not watch Stories recreationally. We will respond to comments and DMs from our community, then close the app.
- What we will block: We will use Instagram through a hardened browser or the mobile web version whenever possible. We will disable background app refresh, location services, and microphone access. We will not link our personal contacts.
YouTube (The Exception)
- Why we will use it: It is the world's second-largest search engine and the primary video platform for parents. If we don't have a presence there, we are invisible to millions of families seeking answers.
- How we will use it: We will upload educational videos. We will never sign in to browse. We will never use the "Recommended" feed. We will never use the comments section to engage (we will direct people to our newsletter or site for discussion).
- What we will block: We will access YouTube via a hardened browser in "Guest Mode" or with strict cookie blocking. We will never link our channel to a Google Account that has browsing history enabled. We will use a dedicated, privacy-focused email for the channel that is not linked to our personal identity.
- The Trade-off: We accept that YouTube tracks viewers of our videos. We cannot prevent that. But we refuse to let our account become a data sink for Google.
Search Engines (Discovery vs. Usage)
- Why we care about Search: We need our content to be discoverable. Parents are searching for answers. If we aren't there, they won't find us.
- How we use Search: We do not use Google. We use DuckDuckGo for all our research and browsing.
- The SEO Reality: We optimize our content so that search engines (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo) can index it. This is a technical necessity for visibility, not an endorsement of their tracking. We do not use Google Analytics or any Google tracking tools on our site.
What Happens When You Click Our Links
When we share a link on social media, the platform tracks that you clicked it. We cannot prevent this. That is the cost of meeting you where you are.
But here is what we can control:
- Our website does not track you. We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party tracking scripts. When you arrive at Firegap, you are invisible to us except for the basic server logs required to keep the site running.
- We do not use link shorteners that mask tracking parameters (like Bit.ly). Our links are clean.
- We do not embed social media widgets on our site. No "Like" buttons, no "Share" counters. These are tracking devices disguised as features.
- No Share Social Buttons: You will not see "Share to Facebook" buttons on our articles. Most share buttons load external scripts that track you the moment you visit the page. Instead, we only have buttons to copy the page link. You can also use your browser's native share menu or simply copy the URL from the browser location bar.
The Hosting Question
Firegap is built on Ghost, a privacy-respecting publishing platform. Our site is hosted on infrastructure that does not sell your data.
We chose Ghost specifically because:
- It is open source.
- It does not inject ads or trackers.
- It allows us to own our content and our subscriber list completely.
- It does not require you to create an account to read our content.
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address and your name if you choose. That is it. We do not collect your location, browsing history, or any other data. And we will never sell, share, or rent your name or email to anyone.
The Standard We Hold Ourselves To
We are not perfect. Every time we log into TikTok or Instagram, we are making a trade-off. We accept that.
But we hold ourselves to the same standard we ask of you:
- Be Intentional. Know why you're opening the app. If you can't articulate a reason, close it.
- Minimize Exposure. Get in, do what you need, get out.
- Harden Your Defenses. Use privacy tools, restrict permissions, and never trust defaults.
- Own the Trade-off. Don't pretend it's harmless. Acknowledge the cost and decide if it's worth it.
We do all of the above. And we'll keep writing about how you can, too.
Questions? Challenges?
If you think we're being hypocritical, we want to hear it. If you think we're missing something, tell us. If you think there's a better way, we're listening.
This page is a living document. As our strategy evolves, we'll update it here. No secrets. No spin.
The paradox isn't a flaw in our logic. It's the proof that our approach works. You can engage with the digital world without surrendering to it.
We do it every day. And we'll teach you how.
